No More Monkey Business

There was protest in Jakarta on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. They protested for government stop the orangutan business. Orangutans were almost extinct, so we must protect them.

Orangutans already became Indonesia's identity. That's because, orangutan only live in Indonesia, especially Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Java. Orangutan's picture ever used in Indonesia's money(500 rupiah, the paper one).

So we need protect orangutan from the extinct, it will save the amount of Indonesia's animals. Also, for our children, grand children, grand grand children, and so on can know about orangutan the identity of Indonesia.

Questions:
1.What do you think about the problems about orangutan? Do you agree with me? Why or why not?
2.What can you do to protect orangutan from extinct?
3.Give me examples of other animals that almost extinct.

Ernesto,

I couldn't agree more with you and with the people who protested in Jakarta, that the orangutan should be protected and protected seriously.

If the government is really serious about protecting animals native to Indonesia it should enforce the laws that exist and punish people found carrying out illegal business in protected animals.

What is the point of having a law if the authorities do not enforce it? And people continue to carry their "monkey business" as usual!

The best we can do at our school is to educate ourselves and as many people as we can about the importance of protecting our native flora and fauna. Children and young people must be encouraged to love the natural environment, including the animals and plants that share this planet with us, the most intelligent animals (although sometimes I wonder if we are truly intelligent since we are destroying our own environment!)

We hope that as our students become adults and enter the world of business, they will have an environmental compass to guide them away from businesses that contribute to the extinction of animals.

We would also be very proud if some of our students became one day members or supporters of organizations whose mission is to protect the enviroment, for example, the World Wildlife Fund.

Other animals that should also be protected are: birds of paradise, the Java Tiger (although it might already be extinct), and the Javan rhinoceros.

I would also be happy if more people protected frogs, because many frog species are endangered. A few years ago, when the rainy season arrived, the frogs arrived too. You could see them everywhere. As years have gone by the frog population has decreased. Now, the rainy season has arrived and I have seen only a couple of frogs in my garden.

Alfred,

Whatever we do in life begins as an awareness that something must be done.

We won't and can't do anything if we do not know in the first place that there is a problem.

For example, if there isn't someone writing about the plight of orangutans, then very few people will know what is happening.

That is the power of information.
It makes people aware that there is a problem. It makes people talk and think about it. It makes them want to explore ways in which they can help.

Because of Ernesto's posting,
I have started reading more about the reasons the orangutans are in danger and found out that that their habitat is in danger because of palm oil plantation expansion
and logging activities.

Palm oil is used in the making of cooking oil. Do you like and eat fried food yourself?

About logging companies, what products do we consume that come from logging operations? Paper is one. Do you use paper?

Ernesto's posting has made you think, "where is the action?" and
perhaps you will motivate yourself to take more action, like not
consuming palm oil products and using paper wisely.

By reading about the extinction of orangutans, by posting about it,
and by drawing your attention and my attention to the extinction of orangutans, Ernesto has already taken some "action".

By replying to Ernesto's posting, you have also taken some "action".

By doing research and becoming more informed about the problem, I have also taken some "action."

Your question should then not be,
"Why don't you do something" and "prove that you care", but
"What could be our NEXT action?"
